How to connect Claude, ChatGPT and other AI assistants to BetterQR (MCP beta)

BetterQR runs a remote MCP server that lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP-compatible assistants read your QR codes, campaigns and scan analytics, so you can ask about a campaign from the assistant you already use. It is read-only, included with the Business and Enterprise plans, and in beta, so access is on request.

What is the BetterQR MCP server?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants call tools in other apps. The BetterQR MCP server gives your assistant a small set of read-only tools for your QR codes and scan data. Once it's connected, you can ask questions like these in a normal chat:

  • “Which of our posters got the most scans last week?”
  • “Compare the bus shelter campaign with the flyer campaign.”
  • “Where are people scanning the Leeds billboard code from?”
  • “Show daily scans for the spring menu code since March.”

The assistant picks the right tool, BetterQR returns the data, and the assistant writes the answer or draws the chart.

Who can use it?

You need all three of these:

  • An organization on Business or Enterprise. The MCP server isn't available on Free or Pro. See pricing.
  • Beta access for your account. While the server is in beta we turn it on per person. Request it from Beta access in the dashboard sidebar. The entry only appears if one of your organizations is on Business or higher.
  • An assistant that supports remote MCP servers, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Cursor.

After you request access, the Beta access page shows the request as pending. Once it's approved, the same page shows your server URL and a ready-made Claude Code command.

How do you connect an assistant?

The server URL is:

https://www.betterqr.app/mcp

There is no API key to copy. The first time your assistant connects, it opens a BetterQR sign-in in your browser, and you approve the connection there.

Claude

  1. In Claude, open Settings → Connectors and choose to add a custom connector.
  2. Give it a name, for example BetterQR, and paste the server URL.
  3. Click Connect, sign in to BetterQR and approve access.

ChatGPT

Add BetterQR as a custom connector (also called an app) with the same server URL, then sign in and approve access. Depending on your ChatGPT plan, custom connectors may sit behind a developer mode setting.

Claude Code

Run this in your terminal, then follow the sign-in link:

claude mcp add --transport http betterqr https://www.betterqr.app/mcp

Cursor and other MCP clients

Add a remote server with the BetterQR URL. In Cursor that is an entry in mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "betterqr": { "url": "https://www.betterqr.app/mcp" }
  }
}

Any client that supports remote MCP over HTTP with OAuth sign-in should work the same way. Menu names in assistants change often. If you can't find the option, look for “custom connector” or “add MCP server”.

What happens when you sign in?

  1. Choose an organization. Each connection reads one organization. Only organizations on Business or higher can be picked.
  2. Review the permissions. The consent screen lists what the assistant will be able to do: view your QR codes and campaigns, and view scan analytics.
  3. Allow or deny. If you allow, you're sent back to your assistant and the BetterQR tools appear.

To use a second organization, add another connection and pick that organization when you sign in.

What can the assistant see and do?

Everything is read-only. The assistant can't create, edit, pause or delete QR codes or campaigns, and it can't change any settings. If you want help drafting new codes or campaigns, use the AI assistant inside BetterQR, which asks you to confirm before anything is saved.

ToolWhat it returns
Who am IThe organization, plan and permissions this connection uses
List QR codesYour QR codes, newest first, filterable by name, type or tag
Get a QR codeOne code's content, short URL, image URL, dashboard link and campaigns
List campaignsYour campaigns, newest first, with how many codes each has
Scan overviewScan totals for the last 7 and 30 days and your top codes by scans
Scans over timeScans and unique visitors per day or hour, for one code or the whole organization
Scans by geographyTop countries and cities for one code
Campaign statsAll-time scans and unique visitors for each code in a campaign

Scan data is limited to your plan's analytics retention, the same history you see in the dashboard. The organization comes from your sign-in, never from the chat, so an assistant can't be talked into reading another organization's data.

How do you disconnect an assistant?

  • Your own connections: open Connected apps from the Beta access page and revoke the app. It stops working on its next request.
  • Everyone's connections (admins): organization admins can see and revoke every member's connected apps under Settings → Connected apps.

Removing someone from the organization also cuts off their assistant, because BetterQR checks membership on every request. If the organization moves below Business, all its connections stop working. After you upgrade again, reconnecting skips the consent screen.

What are the beta limits?

  • Read-only. Creating or editing codes through MCP isn't available yet.
  • Rate limits. Requests are limited per organization, with a lower limit for scan analytics. If you hit one, the assistant is told to try again in a minute.
  • Access on request. Every person who wants to connect needs beta access, even within the same organization.
  • Things may change. Tool names and outputs can change during the beta. Assistants discover the tools on each connection, so you don't need to update anything.

Troubleshooting

MessageWhat to do
“MCP is in beta. Request access in BetterQR.”Your account doesn't have beta access yet. Request it from the Beta access page and wait for approval.
“MCP access requires the Business plan or higher.”The connected organization is on Free or Pro. Upgrade it in Settings → Billing, or connect a different organization.
“This connection is no longer authorized.”The app was revoked or you left the organization. Remove the connector in your assistant and add it again.
“Too many requests. Try again in a minute.”Wait a minute and ask again, ideally with a narrower question.

Answers are only as useful as the codes behind them. If every poster shares one QR code, no assistant can tell you which one worked. The billboard scan tracking guide shows how to give each placement its own code.

Ask your assistant which poster worked

Give every placement its own dynamic QR code, then ask Claude or ChatGPT how each one is doing.
